Heyrick Bond Gunning
Chief Executive Officer
Heyrick is the CEO of S-RM. As well as leading S-RM, he keeps close to the clients and is responsible for the development and strengthening of existing client relations across S-RM.
He has over 25 years of experience managing risk and prior to joining S-RM in 2006, he was the Managing Director of Security Consulting at Kroll, where he was also Head of Kidnap for Ransom. He previously consulted to DHL for a year in Iraq, flying into the country the day the second Gulf War ended and setting up a business with annual revenues in excess of $70m. In 2000, he was the Head of Client Engagement at Mergermarket, a financial services information provider, servicing clients in EMEA and USA, before which he served in the British Army.
Heyrick has an Honours Degree from the University of Manchester, specialising in Anatolian Archaeology, is an Alumni of INSEAD Business School and in 2004 his first book ‘Baghdad Business School’ was published.
Martin is a board director of S-RM with a focus on business development and the future growth of S-RM. In this capacity, he works closely with the CEO.
Prior to joining S-RM Martin spent 22 years at Goldman Sachs. During his Goldman career he assumed a number of sales leadership roles across the equities division, the last of which was responsibility for the equities business in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Martin became a Partner in 2002 and upon his retirement from GS at the end of 2011, he was asked to become an Advisory Director to the firm for another 2 years.
Martin has a wealth of experience in building client focused businesses in both developed and emerging markets, in addition to managing and developing talent from diverse backgrounds.
Chief Operating Officer
Rob is a board director and Chief Operating Officer.
Rob has been with the business for 8 years and during that time has built up considerable global experience in operational risk management, having consulted to a wide range of private and corporate clients, including in the extractive, power generation, media, professional services and Fast Moving Consumer Goods sectors.
Rob’s depth of understanding within the risk sector derives from his 13 years as an officer in the British Army, including active service in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans. He has since successfully translated those skills into the commercial environment. Rob has an Honours degree in Business Studies and an MA in Defence Studies from Kings College.
Head of Business Intelligence
Jamie is a board director and Head of Business Intelligence.
Jamie has been with the business for 5 years and prior to this he worked as Associate Director for four years in India for Kroll Associates, managing projects which evaluated the financial, political, security and reputational risk for companies looking to conduct business in South Asia. As well as managing Kroll’s relationships with European clients looking to do business in South Asia, he also advised Indian clients looking at markets outside India. Jamie has also worked at Freshminds, an award-winning research consultancy in London, where he gained professional experience working on behalf of McKinsey and Bain.
Jamie holds an LLB Joint Honours in Law and French from the University of Bristol and speaks French and basic Hindi.
Philip Kaye (Chair)
Head of Private Clients
Philip is the Head of Private Clients and chairs the Executive Committee at S-RM, responsible for the day to day delivery of bespoke Lifestyle and Security services to Ultra High Net-Worth (UHNW) families and individuals. Since setting up the Private Client Services department in 2011, Philip has worked for royal families, entrepreneurs, CEOs, multi-generational families, celebrities and sports professionals, personally leading tasks across Africa, the Far East, Europe and the United States.
Philip’s breadth of experience means he is ideally placed to deliver a seamless Private Client service either independently or as part of an integrated family office-style solution. His hands-on approach means comprehensive, rapid and effective assistance can be delivered to Clients globally. He is a confident and clear negotiator with a successful track record of building and maintaining relationships with both Clients and intermediaries. Prior to working for S-RM, Philip spent seven years in the British Army as a Captain in the King’s Royal Hussars and Royal Gurkha Rifles where he saw active service in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Jim is a Chartered Accountant with post-qualification experience in a variety of different industries and size businesses. Having trained in a London Audit firm he spent 7 years at Australia’s fastest growing Telecommunications retailer before returning to London for a role at Talk Talk PLC. Jim has subsequently worked in commercial and management roles at an online Market Research Business. He has a bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Manchester University.
Head of Cyber Security
Mark runs the global cyber security consultancy team at S-RM and is the cyber team technical lead. He has over 22 years’ experience in the information security field. He combines a strong background as a Chief Information Security Officer (Yell Ltd) with almost 10 years of security and risk consulting delivery into a range of clients including Merrill Lynch, Cable & Wireless (NTL), Scottish & Southern Electric and Chase Manhattan Bank. Mark has a wide range of specialist topics including risk management, business continuity, compliance and cyber security governance. Mark is a CISSP, Payment Card Industry QSA and ISO 27001 Lead Auditor.
John is the legal counsel at S-RM and with over 20 years' experience dealing with commercial litigation and employment is a commercial dispute resolution expert, with a broad range of litigation experience.
As a partner in private practice in a large regional firm in the UK, and then as a consultant for Clyde & Co's Tripoli office in Libya John has advised on a range of high-value complex disputes, often with multi-jurisdictional dimensions. He is practiced in the fields of defence and security, and regularly advises on all aspects of cyber related issues.
John started his professional life as an officer in the British Army before becoming a solicitor. He is a Member of the Law Society of England & Wales, the Employment Lawyers Association and a founder member of the Professional Negligence Lawyers Association.
John has a LLB(Hons) from Manchester Metropolitan University, Law Society Finals from The College of Law, Chancery Lane and speaks French.
Head of Dispute and Litigation Support
Victoria is Head of Dispute and Litigation Support and a member of the Executive Committee at S-RM. Victoria oversees all investigative work, including dispute & litigation support, asset tracing and pre-transactional due diligence. Since joining the company in 2014, Victoria has managed varied projects on behalf of law firms, banks, private individuals and corporates, obtaining and evaluating intelligence to help clients reach a decision as to how to proceed with their current concerns.
Victoria and her team react quickly to their clients’ evolving needs and provide clear advice and intelligence designed to help clients attain a satisfactory conclusion. Her breadth of experience means that she is able to advise clients on the most suitable lines of enquiry.
Prior to joining S-RM in 2014, Victoria spent five years at a London-based business intelligence and corporate investigations consultancy. While there, she specialised in complex investigations and asset traces, with a particular focus on Russia & the CIS. Victoria has an MA from the University of Cambridge in Modern & Medieval Languages (Russian and French).
Emil de Carvalho
Managing Director, Latin America
Emil de Carvalho directs S-RM's services in Latin America and the Caribbean. Previously, Emil was General Manager for International Security at Vale, the global mining company. At Vale he was responsible for protecting the corporation’s people, assets and reputation worldwide. He established and directed the company’s global security team and corporate crisis management structure, in addition to leading internal investigations and managing complex international crises. Prior to Vale, Emil held management positions at Control Risks and International SOS, in the crisis and security consulting and emergency assistance fields. Emil has a Masters degree in International Relations from the University of St. Andrews and has further management and leadership qualifications from Wharton, MIT and IMD. Emil speaks fluent English, Portuguese, French and Spanish.
Head of Consulting, Risk Services
Julian has worked extensively in most countries in the Middle East, across Africa, South and Central Asia and Russia and former CIS.
At S-RM he has developed a number of our specific Corporate Risk Management services and oversees the training of S-RM's in-country consultants. Most recently, he has developed new corporate security risk assessment models based on the industry standards API / ANSI 780, FEMA 452 and ISO 31000:2009, and Crisis Management models based on BSI 11200. Julian works regularly with companies in the Oil & Gas sector and others operating in frontier and emerging markets from the early stages when a new investment is being considered and a political, strategic and physical risk assessment is required to help inform the decision making process through to providing ongoing support to manage and mitigate those risks once a business becomes operational.
Prior to joining S-RM, Julian was a Major in the British Army, where he gained a wide range of operational experience in the Parachute Regiment and the Army Air Corps. Julian has a master's degree in Russian Language and Politics.
Head of HR
Lesley is the Head of HR at S-RM. Lesley's career in HR has encompassed roles with British Gas, ICI, ntl and Hess. She held a number of senior HR roles with Hess, most recently as their Head of Global Mobility based in Houston, US. She has also completed assignments with Vodafone and the Department of Health.
Lesley's areas of experience include HR strategy, talent management, managing organization change, coaching and leadership development.
Rachel McLaughlin is Head of S-RM's office in South Africa. Prior to joining S-RM, Rachel worked for seven years in the Ministry of Defence in a variety of roles within Defence Intelligence, the Permanent Joint Headquarters and Security Policy & Operations. She was appointed MBE in 2013 for Services to Defence. Rachel has an MPhil in International Relations and a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Studies, both from the University of Cambridge. Rachel speaks Chinese, French and German.
Jess McMonagle is Associate Director, Compliance at S-RM; she is a member of the S-RM Executive Committee and S-RM Risk Committee. Jess has been working in the industry since 2010 and most recently held the position of Chief Compliance Officer for a global risk management company supporting complex offshore projects for a number of oil majors. She has extensive experience of implementing global administrative processes in accordance with local compliance requirements; this includes management of S-RM's global insurance policies.
Jess maintains the company's certifications to relevant ISO and other professional standards, including membership of the International Code of Conduct Association (ICoCA). She is actively engaged with a number of industry groups and has been an Executive Committee member of the Security in Complex Environments Group (SCEG) since 2015. Since then, Jess has also worked with the Home Office and UK Export Control on key operational and compliance issues.
Jess has a BA in Modern Languages from the University of Sheffield and speaks French, Spanish and Portuguese.
Prior to joining S-RM, Ed was CEO and founder director of a privately owned strategic advisory company that provided a bridge for investors operating in emerging and frontier markets. Ed retired as a Brigadier General in 2008 following a distinguished 24 year career in the British Army which included command of the UK Special Forces, and command of the British forces in Afghanistan in 2006. He has an Honours degree in Politics and International Relations from Exeter University and MAs in Military Technology and Defence Studies from Cranfield University.
Kelly, who is based in London, is Chief Regional Officer of XL Catlin's Insurance Operations. She is also Deputy Chair of the Insurance Leadership Team and a member of the XL Catlin Leadership Team.
Prior to the launch of XL Catlin in May 2015, Kelly held the position of Chief Executive, Global Professional at XL Group.
Kelly has 30 years of experience in the insurance industry, including a number of roles in financial lines underwriting and management.
Before joining XL Group in 2014, Kelly served as Head of Specialty Lines for Europe, Middle East and Africa at AIG. Earlier, she served as AIG's Country Manager in France, where she oversaw commercial and consumer business development, operations and systems, claims, finance, accounting, legal and human resources. She is a graduate of Villanova University.
Neil Young brings 30 years’ plus experience in building K&R response teams to S-RM. He is well known throughout the K&R industry having specialised in this market since advising on his first kidnap negotiation in 1986. He established Neil Young Associates in 1990 turning it into an internationally recognised brand as one of the world’s leading specialist kidnap and extortion consultancies retained by various Lloyd’s of London underwriting syndicates and US insurers.
Neil has extensive experience in crisis management, pre-incident planning and training, and in response to crisis incidents including maritime piracy, as well as wide experience in security and risk management and security consulting projects. He has personally deployed to advise on kidnap response cases (including terrorist kidnaps), training tasks and consulting projects in the USA, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
Prior to entering the security industry in 1985, Neil served as an officer in the British Army and was commissioned into the Parachute Regiment.
Cyrus Kadivar is an advisor to S-RM, focusing on advising global clients, business origination and account relationships. He works closely with the company’s key divisional heads and the Business Development team. Prior to S-RM, he was Senior Director for five years at Kroll Associates in London where he was part of the Executive Business Development Team as well as managing commercial due diligence & special investigations projects in EMEA. Previously, Cyrus worked as a banker at Manufacturers Hanover Trust, held various corporate treasury roles at Esselte, Ladbrokes PLC (formerly Hilton Group), Dawson Holdings PLC, Hogg Robinson, Tata-Tetley (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Global Beverages)and has pursued a career as a freelance journalist. He holds a M.A. in Comparative Governments & International Relations from Villanova University. He is fluent in English, French and Persian (Farsi).
Nick Edmunds has lived and worked across the Middle East since 2003, winning and delivering projects in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar. He established presence for S-RM in the Middle East in 2012 and is now S-RM’s advisor in UAE, supporting the delivery of a range of services to Private Clients, Financial, Oil and Gas, Real Estate and Construction, Security and Defence sectors. Prior to joining S-RM, he worked in the Middle East as a commercial and business development director in the security sector following a 10 year career as a former officer in the British Army.
Hugo van Vredenburch
Hugo is currently Chairman of Interactive Investor as well as Non-Executive Director of TMF Group and Tempus Energy.
Hugo is the former CEO of TMF Group. A position he held since September 2010. Hugo began his career in 1989, working for Tokyo Pacific Holdings in Japan as an analyst and subsequently as General Manager and CIO. He joined Goldman Sachs & Co in 1992, holding a variety of roles over a 13-year period – including heading up the Equities Division in Japan, as COO of the Global Equities Division and taking co-leadership of the Pan-European Equities Franchise. Prior to leaving Goldman Sachs in 2005, he was a Partner and Managing Director. Hugo joined Equity Trust in 2005 as CEO, serving in this position until August 2009, prior to the merger of Equity Trust and TMF Group in 2010.
